Are you a cyclist? Well, whether you use your bike to commute, for sport or just for the occasional joy ride I think this site may interest you, Brush and Spoke. Their tag line is, "the art of a two wheel lifestyle". Love it!
Brush and Spoke is bursting with great illustration, graphic design and photography. Every few days or so you'll find an addition to the art 'wall'. They accept submissions. So, if you have some especially awesome original artwork (bicycle subject required- duh), send them your goods! If you make it on the wall, be sure to let me know!!!
Top Photo: In Our Hearts and On Our Minds, available in the Etsy shop Broken Heart Social Club. There are lots of other cute bike (and non-bike) prints and tees too!

Married for 50 Years; Love Ever After
My BF shared this Time photo essay with me, shot by Lauren Fleishmen. I wanted to pass it along to all of you since it's so sweet (and appropriate for today). The photo collection features 13 New Yorkers who've been married 50 years (or more!) and their love story. I just adore the story about these two, Milton and Sylvia Zisman. When the couple first met in the Catskills, Sylvia was a friend of Milton's (ex)girlfriend!
Happy Valentine's Day!
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and is off to a great Monday. My morning didn't get off to the greatest start*. But I've got NY fashion week photos to oogle and a cozy dinner this evening to look forward to. My BF is cooking, he's the best!
So, whether you're single or smitten, have a lovely V-day! Smile a little more than usual. Tell someone you love them. I'm not into over-the top celebrations or audacious and cliche gifts. But, to each his own. I hope you enjoy today, however you choose to celebrate.
*There was an 'incident' on the train this morning, and instead of a 20 minute commute it look and hour and a half. I'm trying to be more positive and will therefore cut my MTA rant in the bud. Toodles for now, dear readers!

Four for Friday
Hi there lovelies! It's that time again... Yell it loud. What time is it? Wha? Can't hear you. I said, WHAT TIME IS IT?!!!
(online audience unites in chorus) Four! For! Friday!
Yep. That's right. Good job. Here you go:
- Perhaps the most incredible cheesecake I've ever seen. No other words. Articulation, impossible. Spellbound. If you feel like taking on this baking challenge or are just curious (about those hazelnut candy toppers!) check out the recipe on Zoe Bakes.
- I'm seeing these lovely enamel lockets everywhere. Gots t' gets me one! You'll find them at Beklina, along with lots of other wonderful items. Beklina's all about sustainable fashion and utilizing organically sourced materials. Yay!
- Think she's pretty gal? She is. And her cooking blog What Katie Ate, is out-of-this-world crazy beautiful! I want to live in there. No joke.
- Have you heard, Anthropologie is officially launching their bridal line on Monday?!!! BHLDN (Beholden) is oh-so pretty. Check out Joanna, 101 Layer Cake, Green Wedding Shoes, and Joy's coverage of the blogger-party debut in Philly. I adore these two gowns and am waiting with baited breath for the full line of accessories. (Jewelry? Shoes? OMG!)

Take me Away
I think I was a little too exuberant, a little too winter gung-ho, early on. Because let me tell you, I'm feeling burnt out. Like charred. I think this weekend I'd like to go away.
Take me away... back to the late 60s. I'll wear a chic shift dress and pile my hair way up, atop my head (because that's just how I roll). I'll wander Beacon Hill (because well, Boston is my favorite place on earth). It will be late spring (because Boston in the winter is worse than New York in the winter). And I will marvel at the iron boot cleaners and cobblestones and brightly painted window shutters with boxes beneath, full of flowers. And it will be a wonderfully sublime weekend.
Daydreams aside, I'm sure it'll be a lovely weekend. I'm gonna rest up. Help the BF recover from a week-long flu (poor thing). I'll read and take hot baths. I'll wander Brooklyn, a little aimlessly, and well bundled up. You have a wonderful weekend too (and a enjoy a fantasy daydream version while you're at it)!

The Brain
What an incredible work space! This creative laboratory was designed by Tom Kundig, of Olson Kundig, for an unnamed filmmaker. Named "The Brain", this modern concrete box, outfitted with rustic steel mezzanine is awash with soft sunlight filtering in through dozens of paned windows. And the views of Seattle's lush forest terrain are to die for!
Pretty Picture/ Jeremy Blincoe
Jeremy Blincoe's work is undeniably entrancing. I read about his most recent project over on Trend Land; "Wander and Wonder" where he photographs children in dream-like landscapes. Trend Land comments, "Blincoe does not force the story or explanation... these richly mysterious scenes are offered as prompts for our own imagination, out of which we are to find our own narratives." It's overtly lush and a little haunting, I just love!

Type Happy/ Bloob
True, it's not the most legible of typefaces. I wouldn't want to read a novel in Bloob. But then, that's not it's purpose.
I get lost in those undulating curves, I want to loop my finger around every coil. Bloob reminds me of a soapy dish, a saucer covered in sudsy bubbles or a summer shoreline with swells and foam filled surf.

Hot Chocolate Festival/ The City Bakery
Attention New Yorkers (or anyone visiting this month), it's that time of the year... the hot chocolate festival!!! We are already a week deep, and I've not yet stopped by The City Bakery for a cup. (My head drops in shame.) I really have no excuse, as my workplace is 30 seconds away. One thing is for sure, when the parents get to town we'll nip in! Possibly two days in a row, the 24th/ Beer Hot Chocolate for Papa. Then the 25th/ Fig Hot Chocolate for Mum. And, of course a trio of pretzel croissants both days!
Also, read more about The City Bakery's little sister, Bird Bath Neighborhood Green Bakery! Yum.
If geography stands in your way, don't fret! I imagine that The City Bakery may be quite far away for most of you. So instead, purchase the ultimate recipe book on Amazon (it's only $10). Within you'll find over 60 different cups o' chocolate that you can stir up in the comfort of your own home.

Love Birds
I hope everyone is off to a terrific Thursday. I'm a little sleepy/ sluggish today on account of yesterday's trip. But, all went well and I'm happily back in the city (especially as this morning's weather says two degrees in Columbus). Ah. Winter.
Along the lines of wishful thinking, springtime and warmer weather, isn't this the cutest feathered couple? What a sweet pair of birdies! Their colors are so beautiful. Check out those pink cheeks!!!
I found them on Cute Overload. Where (I'll admit it) I've been detained for the last half hour. It's incredibly difficult for me to part with puppies who find the iPhone perplexing, smile, and lunge for cupcakes.

DIY Thumbtacks
I'm a huge sucker for bulletin boards (both real and virtual). I've got two large cork boards in my home and have commandeered the fridge as a magnetized third. So when I saw these cute little thumb tacks on the Mint Design blog I went into a fit of excitement! These puffy fabric covered push pins would look perfect on my cork board, which happens to already covered with other DIY pins.
Let me tell you a little story about my cork (as in, bottle) pins...
After living in NY for a little over 4 years, I'd amassed quite a collection of wine and champagne corks. They were being held, with no intention of use, in an empty terracotta pot, under my kitchen sink. Then, one summer day I read this post at Hither and Thither. It got me thinking. I've got to either do something with those corks or throw them out! I was in the process of hanging a bulletin board the following day and it dawned on me, how cute would cork pins be on a cork board? Too cute! And after hanging the board I spent a little time with my craft glue and some nail-head push pins. The end.
Oh wait! One more thing! While we're on the subject of "cute cork" check this and these out!

Jetting Off (For a Day)
Good morning, m' dears! I have some work that takes me to Ohio. But, as long as weather prevails, I'll be back in New York by bed time. Don't worry, I've got posts saved up for you, later today.
While on the subject of travel, I must say that one thing I love (about air travel on the east coast) is Laguardia Airport. It's the east coast traveler's secret. Besides the painless security, you get to fly in low, over the city. And while that may sound a little (or perhaps, considerably) alarming to some, it's really breathtaking!

Gifts that Give
The ladies at Big Girls Small Kitchen have a wonderful post today on their blog, "The 6 Best Edible Valentine's Gifts, That Give Back". Number five on the list won my heart. I'm such a sucker for the animals.
It's called Rescue Chocolate. Rescue Chocolate donates 100% of their profits to animal rescue organizations around the country. The group is headquartered in Brooklyn, and was inspired by Mocha a rescued shelter pup. Read more about their story here. The chocolates (vegan and certified Kosher Parve) are named and packaged to shed light on different aspects of the current pet “overpopulation” epidemic. Besides raising funds for rescues, Rescue Chocolate wants to "get the word out about these oh-so-fixable issues". What a super organization! And the sweets look so, so good!

Not-Quite-Handmade Valentine's/ iPhone
While they're not crafty in the sense that you made them, these Cartolina cards are still really crafty-cute! Their app includes lots of pretty design that are exquisitely muli-purpose too! Many are perfectly suited for Valentine's Day cards, but they could also double as a Thank You, Happy Birthday, or 'just because' note. Cartolina also has a secondary app they've developed especially for the holidays (keep that one in mind come December). Check 'em out!

Transitional Colors/ DVF
Last weekend I was aimlessly scanning oodles of Pinterest pin-boards for something especially pretty. I happened upon a wonderful board themed "i love ombre".
"Oooh!" I thought to myself, "I love ombre too!" Click- repin- repin- repin!!! It was a pinning frenzy. I'm glad you weren't there, it got a little ugly (in a compulsive, visually gluttonous, image hording type way). But, now I'm digressing terribly; getting quite far from the point of this entry...
When I saw this lovely image of Gutterman silk thread on "i love ombre" I was immediately reminded of DVF's pre-fall show. (Last Friday I squirreled away a few dozen looks, from various shows with the intent of sharing them this week.) I saw these pretty silk spools and caught my breath- Diane von Furstenburg must have seen this photo and become inspired too! And then, she created an entire collection around this dreamy palette!
Maybe not. Okay, probably not. But, still. Beautiful palette. Gorgeous clothes. Random story- concluded.

Butternut Squash & Oatmeal Muffins
If you recall, the 'rough sketch' plan of my weekend included baking a mystery dessert. It was Pumpkin Delight. And it didn't happen.
The story goes: it was a dark and stormy Saturday (afternoon), and it was really cold. Really cold, people. Really. I stood in front of my pantry and faced the facts. I was not leaving the warmth of my abode for ingredients. If I wanted to bake, I was going to bake with the goods at hand.
So I adapted the food network's recipe for butternut squash muffins. And, it was a success. A surprising and totally uplifting success. It meant that I wouldn't have to leave my apartment for lunch. Or dinner. You think I'm kidding? Well, I'm not. I ate those muffins like it was no one's business. Now, with no further ado, the how-to...
Butternut Squash & Oatmeal Muffins
1 medium butternut squash; peeled & cubed
1.5 cups rice flour (wheat flour will work fine too, if you're not going gluten-free)
1.5 cups rolled oats
1.5 cups raw brown sugar (other sugars would work too)
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cinnamon (you could also add nutmeg or allspice for taste)
6 teaspoons Ener-G egg replacer whipped with 3 tablespoons water (or 4 eggs)
.5 cup oil (whatever you prefer; olive, canola, grape-seed, coconut, etc.)
- Prepare the squash: steam squash & puree in a food processor or blender (this ended up making about 3 cups- but I didn't actually measure it)
- Whip together Ener-G egg replacer and water is a small bowl
- Combine squash puree, Ener-G (or 4 eggs), and the oil in a large mixing bowl
- In a medium mixing bowl combine flour, oats, sugar, baking soda, salt and cinnamon, stir this dry mixture into the wet ingredients in the large mixing bowl.
- Do not over mix, the muffin batter should be gooey, but not runny. If the batter is too runny add more flour and oats in (equal parts). It should "drop" of a spoon, not "drip".
- Either line a muffin pan with paper cups or spray the pan with oil/ and powder with flour. Fill cups with muffin batter. Try not to make a mess like I did.
- Stick them suckers in a pre-heated oven at 350 and wait. (I was very, very bad and did not time my cooking... I think it was about 15 minutes.) Before removing pans from the oven test the center muffin with a tooth-pick or fork. If it comes out clean then these babies are done! Let cool. Devour.
* On Sunday the BF and I took a few muffins and added softened tofu cream cheese to their tops. Scrumptious! There are more complicated recipes out there for cream cheese topping (like the food network one) with citrus and vanilla, and other junk. But I'm into simplification. If you wanted your topping a little sweeter, whip the cream cheese with a little sugar or honey. Enjoy!!!

A Little Good News
My weekend got off to a super start. Friday evening I had a little chat with Mum, and my parents have decided to come visit NY earlier than planned! They'll be here in just over two weeks. I've got cleaning and planning to do! Hurray!!!
This cute suitcase print is available on Etsy. There are lots of other adorable prints in the Colage Orama shop. Go check them all out! They are hand printed on recycled book pages. Each book is rescued from destruction and given new life as a pretty piece of art. There's a great breadth of subject matter, so you're sure to find something to your fancy. And, if you purchase 3 pieces you may select a 4th as a gift!

The Scent of Lilies
Good morning, happy Monday! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Mine was pretty super, I must say (more about that later). For the time being, lets dwell for a moment on these lovely blooms...
Do you love lilies of the valley? I thought so. I do too. Sometimes I catch myself daydreaming about springtime in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, looking out over carpets of these beauties. Hence, my obsession with this newly found product: scented lily of the valley drawer liners from Caswell-Massey. Sigh. It's just too wonderful.

Four for Friday
FfF is back! Did you doubt my commitment? Tsk, tsk, tsk. Really, you should know better! I'm completely incapable of holding back my alluring findings. It's just not within my power.
So, here we go...
- Find some time to click back through the archives of this blog. So much lovely package design; it turns me consumer-crazy! I want everything! More! Now!
- If you're a New Yorker, who likes to cook, with nothing planned for this evening, check out this party! On the other hand, if you like to cook, with nothing planned for this evening, but are not a New Yorker... then you should check out the Big Girls Little Kitchen recipes for something to serve tonight! (This grilled cheese with pears & pecans is staring me down!)
- This wedding is fully of lovely details but my favorite part is the location! Marvimon in LA. Read all about the venue's green feats (hurray) and scan their photo gallery (OMG- the back courtyard)!!!
- Flip through this NY Times photo essay. Beautiful pictures; they tell such a heartbreaking story about America and our diet.

It's the Week's End!
I'm really looking forward to some intense R&R. It's seemed like the longest of weeks! Perhaps the relentlessly harsh winter here has something to do with my exhaustion. Yes. Yes, I think so. Definitely.
I don't have any concrete plans for this weekend. It's nice to 'officially' be free from duties and expectations. Although I confess, a rough outline of tasks and adventures exists (duh- I'm a total planner nerd). The image of engineers (planning a future visit to the moon) is from Fffound. I think my planning is akin to the picture... merely sketched out, but full of intent and purpose.
Are you a planner, dear reader? What do you have sketched out for the weekend?
Here's what I've got my eye on:
- Two days after I posted this, I found these. Note to self: they need to happen. Really soon. Maybe for dinner. Okay, not for dinner. But ASAP!
- So... I've been terrible; ignoring my houseplants for the last month. Sorry plants*! I need to take a quick trip to the nursery for some new terracotta pots, fresh potting mix and orchid fertilizer. I also have a window sill full of annuals past their prime. These pots are going to get re-seeded with herbs!
- Last weekend I used my Babycakes bake book for an apple-peach pie. It was good, but lacked the decadent sweetness I'm used to finding in desserts. This weekend I want to try a family favorite (gluten free/vegan version). Here is a hint, it's part vegetable pie, part cake!
- Going to find a little time to practice this paper art. Hopefully it goes well and some crafty V-day cards get made!
*These are not actually my plants. Although, there is a definite resemblance. Again, sorry plants!

Happy Birthday Wishes!!!
Today my super sweet big, little-brother turns 25. Tonight he's headed out for a quiet sushi dinner with the family and his lovely girlfriend. I wish I could be there!
I'd bring my bro a bonsai cake, hemp ice cream and a huge bunch of eco-friendly balloons. I'd also make him a fireman's red birthday crown with '25' in glitter!!! Love you, Mr. Dude!

Pretty Palette/ Ice: Gray & Poppin' Aqua
Blue is about to make a huge comeback, especially in electric shades. Teal and icy aqua are back on the scene! Cerulean and deep cobalt are going to make appearances too, but I'll save the dishing on those for another day. The truth is, I've always had a soft spot for crystalline blues (especially a certain aquamarine ring of grandma's)! I'm happy to see this lovely color family trending again. It's so breezy. Ideal for spring. But, perfect for brightening up the latter half of winter as well. How gorgeous is it mixed in with soft gray shades?!
Illustration by Caroline Rogers from It Looks Good To Me, from her post What I Wish I Wore Today. I wish I was wearing it too, Caroline! I think I'd opt for a big teal hair bow instead of the dye job though.
Below, clockwise from far left:
- Poster to live by, for sale on Etsy, found on It's Mary Ruffle
- Cluster of gems found here (and learn all about aquamarines!)
- A chic look from Antonio Berardi pre-fall 2011

Doo.Ri/ Harlequin Print
With New York's Fall 2011 fashion week around the corner I'm playing some catch-up. The last couple months have been a whirlwind and I've become a very delinquent fashionista. I've only been through about half of the Pre-Fall shows... eek! Sadly, I only had the chance to share one obsession with you thus far.
But, I've reserved today for some in-depth research. I'll try to share a few more of my favorite looks before next Wednesday's new season debuts.
So, first off is Doo.Ri! I'm loving this court jester print in pretty peach, creamy ivory and sooty gray. In any other color combo it would be totally terrifying (brights? yuck!). My favorite look is on the far left. This bateau neck dolman blouse has such a pretty winged armhole and ruffle at the side seam. And paired with relaxed trousers? Perfection!

Handmade Valentines/ Lace Doilies
What delightful little cards! And, Avie Designs has wonderful (flawlessly specific) DIY instructions for them! While they're completely appropriate as valentines, they would also make darling thank you cards. Or, if you made them super-mini, they'd be perfect as gift tags.
My baby sissy has made me pretty paper doily valentines for the past few years. I love them all, they're up on my pin-board and refrigerator year round! I'm a huge sucker for lace, so their pretty punch texture pulls me in like a magnet. There's also something charming and nostalgic about them, no matter how simple and rustic or elegant and ornate. They all sing of young, innocent adoration and pure, unceasing devotion.

Dessert Time/ Mexican Chocolate Pudding
I skimmed through The Minimalists favorite 25 recipes yesterday. Very few jumped out at me, I suppose because they're mostly meaty dishes, or desserts heavy on eggs and gelatin. But, Mark Bittman did entice me with this recipe for tofu pudding!
The spices make this one sound heavenly! I'm thinking about whipping up a bowlful tonight. Everything on the list is a fixture in my kitchen and the video tutorial makes it look so easy. Mmmm!

Pretty Picture/ Luci Everett
I'm crazy about Luci Everett's work. It's sooooo pretty! Her style is so soft, so deliciously enticing, every piece seems to whisper in your ear and draw you closer.
This delicate geranium watercolor was found on her Flickr page. I discovered loads more loveliness on her website too. Check out this mixed media ampersand, party themed sketch book, and gorgeous album art. She also has a wonderful blog, Happiness Etc.

Valentine's Fruit Basket
In the spirit of a handmade and heartfelt V-day, here is another idea! I think this one is especially sweet for those of us in the frigid parts who are missing out on sun ripened fresh fruit. Pile a pretty assortment (of someone's favorites) in a basket and add a big red bow! Another spin... fill a bowl with one type of fruit and include a hand written recipe for their favorite desert. Think: colorful medly of apples for the evening's fritters or a perfect bunch of bananas for a cream pie!

Pantone Party
Pantone mugs are definitely not new to the scene. I see them at nearly every knick-knack gift shop in the greater metropolitan area. But, despite dwindling novelty they're still pretty cute! And, they're great for any (and every type of) designer.
Now the trendy cup is seeing it's Pantone cousins show up to the party. Cookies! iPhone cases! And Rubik's Cubes?!!!

- Unfortunately, Rubitone is not actually available. It's a witty product concept from industrial designer Ignacio Pilotto. Maybe it'll get picked up soon though, after all, it's a darn cute idea!

Behind Closed Doors
I'm one of those people who is obsessed with other people's New York homes. Forget the Big Red Bus, my NY dream tour would be a weekend of open-houses. Check out these two incredible places; one located in the heart of the city, at CPS and the other in a tumultuous neighborhood of Brooklyn, Bed Sty. The Central Park South apartment has a location (and views) to die for. On the other hand, the flat in Brooklyn is much more my style (eclectic modern). All photos, by Jamie Beck, are apart of the series At Home With. This project is rocking my world. There's no other way to say it.
Thank you Dress, Design & Decor for bringing the talented Miss Beck into my life!
Pretty Palette/ Valentine's: Ruby Reds
Maybe I'm getting inspired from all the Valentine's hooplah around, but right now I'm loving this glorious range of reds. I'm especially fond of the play between warm ruby next to strawberry pink and a bluer magenta. These rouge colors are especially pretty when offset with a little kiss, or dramatic wash, of winter white.

Handmade Valentines/ Quilling
I haven't made Valentines in a few years, but I love the idea of hand crafted love notes. I was doing a little scouting on Martha's site for inspiration, and came across an incredible article on the art of quilling. I'd never heard of quilling, but oh my, it's gorgeous! The delicate curls, scrolls, coils, and folds of paper make ordinary 2D script and flourishes look mundane. I want to save up some patience and have a go at it!
